Only two days before the critical Super Tuesday primaries, 2020 Democrats are dropping like flies after Joe Biden’s big comeback in South Carolina.
The latest to pull the plug is Mayor Pete Buttigieg whose surprisingly strong finish in the controversial Iowa caucuses ended up being the high-water mark of his now-defunct campaign.
According to reports, the 38-year-old darling of the media and Hollywood celebs who fell in love with the openly gay candidate is calling it quits following his dismal showing in the Palmetto State where he struggled to appeal to the heavily-black voters who turned out in big numbers to pull Biden’s chestnuts out of the fire.
Buttigieg finished a distant forth, behind billionaire Tom Steyer who called it quits on Saturday and slightly ahead of the thoroughly unlikable fake Indian Elizabeth Warren who nevertheless, continues to persist.
Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg will suspend his presidential campaign in a speech Sunday night, a senior campaign aide confirms to NPR.
Buttigieg will give the remarks from South Bend.
Known colloquially as “Mayor Pete,” Buttigieg, who’s 38, was one of the youngest Democratic candidates seeking the nomination and the first openly gay candidate to mount a major campaign for the presidency.
A graduate of Harvard and Oxford and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, Buttigieg gained national recognition in 2017 during an unsuccessful bid to serve as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
He spent eight years in office in South Bend, and campaigned on the idea of “inter-generational justice.”
When he first announced his candidacy for president last year, Buttigieg was perceived as a little-known long shot, but he quickly emerged among the front-runners in the crowded Democratic field with his moderate message.
The departure of Steyer and Buttigieg – and soon Amy Klobuchar – is a sign that the Democrat establishment is looking to consolidate resources into a coordinated effort to take out front-runner Bernie Sanders now instead of waiting to screw him at the convention.
Mayor Pete has yet to officially throw his support behind Biden but it is coming soon as he is now faced with settling for a cabinet position in a Democrat administration.
