President Trump has finally made a move to fight back against the slanderous liberal media, filing a bombshell lawsuit against The New York Times for libel in their reporting of a false story regarding Trump and Russia.
“Today, Team Trump filed a libel lawsuit against the New York Times over a story falsely reporting as fact a conspiracy with Russia,” the campaign said.
The campaign also claims that the New York Times knowingly published false and defamatory information on Trump in an attempt to slander his name, adding that they hope the lawsuit “holds the news organization accountable.”
Check out the extra details Trump’s campaign provided below:
"The statements were and are 100 percent false and defamatory," Jenna Ellis, a lawyer for the campaign, said in a statement.
The story under scrutiny was written by the New York Times last year, and it claimed that President Trump had an “overarching deal” with Russia. High profile Democrats shared this story, and it quickly spread across national headlines.
Here is a portion of the story involved in the lawsuit:
"There was no need for detailed electoral collusion between the Trump campaign and Vladimir Putin’s oligarchy because they had an overarching deal: the quid of help in the campaign against Hillary Clinton for the quo of a new pro-Russian foreign policy, starting with relief from the Obama administration’s burdensome economic sanctions.”
A spokesperson for the New York Times told The Hill that "The Trump Campaign has turned to the courts to try to punish an opinion writer for having an opinion they find unacceptable. Fortunately, the law protects the right of Americans to express their judgments and conclusions, especially about events of public importance. We look forward to vindicating that right in this case."
This lawsuit may result in the New York Times owing President Trump millions of dollars in compensatory damages as well as punitive damages.
