“Don’t Need The Fun Police”: San Fran Mayor Defends Violating Her Own Mask Mandate

San Francisco, CA - Mar 13, 2021: San Francisco Mayor London Breed speaking to participants during the Open the Schools Rally at Civic Center in front of City Hall.

San Francisco mayor London Breed is defending herself after she violated her own mask mandate while attending a packed event in jazz club in San Francisco last week. In August, Breed issued a mask mandate for everyone in San Fransisco (except for herself it now appears), requiring San Franciscans to wear a mask at all times indoors even if they are vaccinated.

Breed said she “was feeling the spirit” and that people need to stop calling her a hypocrite because she doesn’t need to hear from “the fun police.”

The mayor was caught red handed last week “dancing behind a table full of drinks,” and “not wearing a face covering as she sang and posed for photos,” according to ABC news.

“Unmasked, singing, and dancing with an equally unmasked crowd, cell phone video shows Mayor London Breed inside a club in the Tenderloin on Wednesday night,” the local outlet reported. “Breed and others enjoyed a surprise performance by Bay Area R&B group, Tony! Toni! Toné!, at the Black Cat on Eddy and Leavenworth Streets. But the maskless moment flies in the face of what [] Mayor Breed has been telling San Franciscans all pandemic long.”

On Monday, Breed unleashed on critics who were calling her out for breaking her own mask mandate.

“While I’m eating and drinking I’m going to keep my mask off,” Breed deflected considering photos and videos showed her without a mask at all times. “And yes, in the time while we’re drinking like everyone else there, we were all having a good time and again all vaccinated.”

“My drink was sitting at the table. I got up and started dancing because I was feeling the spirit and I wasn’t thinking about a mask,” Breed explained. “I was thinking about having a good time and in the process I was following the health orders.”

Breed explained that she “don’t need the fun police to come in and micromanage and tell us what we should or shouldn’t be doing.”

“The fact that this story became about me and less about the artists and nightlife, which I will continue to enjoy in San Francisco, is very unfortunate,” she said as she continued to prove herself to be a hypocrite.

Check out what Fox News reported had to say about the incident:

The Black Cat Nightclub’s Instagram page had posted, and then deleted, a photo showing Breed smiling and partying with friends maskless on Wednesday evening, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. She was accompanied by BLM co-founder Alicia Garza and singer Raphael Saadiq.

Videos and photos of Breed in the jazz club, however, continue to circulate on social media and show other people in the club were also maskless.

San Francisco’s mask mandate states, “Everyone, including people who are fully vaccinated, must wear a well-fitted mask in indoor public settings at all times,” and adds, “people may remove their well-fitted mask while actively eating or drinking.”

There were drinks and cocktails spotted on a table near Breed, but she was not “actively” drinking them while posing for photos and singing.

“She clearly feels like it’s fine and safe to remove her mask then let that be the rule for everybody,” the gym owner added. “You’re not impervious to COVID any more than I am, so let the rules for you be the same as the rules for me.”

Breed told the Chronicle that she tests for COVID-19 often, and “at the end of the day, everyone who comes in here has to show proof of vaccination. That gives me a lot of reassurance.”

“I’ve been very careful, not just because I want to set an example but because I don’t want to get COVID. I also want to make sure that I’m not someone transmitting COVID to other people,” she said. “This entire pandemic has been focused on keeping people safe.”
