ENOUGH: GOP Lawmaker to Introduce Bill to Make Monument Vandalism a Federal Crime

While the Democrats cheer on Left-wing rioters who are destroying national monuments, one Republican is trying to save them by bringing all statues and memorials depicting historical figures under federal protection.
Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) said earlier this week he planned to introduce a bill that would amend existing law to extend federal protections to monuments of American presidents and any founding father.
“I will be introducing a piece of legislation that would amend the Veterans’ Memorial Preservation Act to include former U.S. presidents and Founding Fathers—making desecrating their memorials a federal offense punishable up to 10 yrs in prison!” he wrote on Twitter while retweeting a WPTA21 story about his bill.
The local report notes:
The "Defending America's Heritage and Culture Act" would amend an existing law from 2003 that protects veterans' memorials.
“Attacks on our national heroes denigrate what makes us American and aim to destroy what binds us as Americans," Banks said, the local affiliate reported. "They’re serious crimes that deserve serious punishment.”
In an interview with The Daily Caller, Banks said he believes the majority of Americans are angry and offended by the desecration and vandalism of historical monuments and figures and want them protected.
Over the past month alone, vandals and criminals have defaced and torn down statues of Francis Scott Key, who wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner,” our national anthem, while captive aboard a British warship during the War of 1812, as well as a monument to Ulysses S. Grant, the top Union general who defeated the Confederacy.
“It’s beyond the pale” what these Left-wing vandals are doing to the monuments, Banks told The DCNF. “They’re trying to erase our history. And so far, people aren’t seeing the kind of leadership they expect from mayors, governors, even Washington. We have to let rioters know that there will be consequences.”
Banks said his legislation is called, “Defending America’s Heritage and Culture Act,” which stands little-to-no chance of going anywhere because Democrats who run the House are led by a Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, who has accused Republicans of killing George Floyd and has allowed her caucus to refer to Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the Senate’s only black Republican member, to be referred to as a “token.”
As for the local leadership, well, most mayors of bigger cities are liberals who also hate America as founded, and as such aren’t going to lift a finger to stop anyone who wants to help themselves to the destruction of any historical monument that ‘offends’ them – even those that are not associated with the oppression of black people or anyone else.
That said, President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr are certainly moving to ensure that federal monuments are protected. They have both said anyone who defaces or destroys an existing monument or statue on federal property will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which should definitely happen.
Banks’ bill is a step in the right direction, though. Even if it doesn’t pass, if Republicans win control of the chamber in November, there is at least a better possibility that it will. Plus, he’s now gone on the record with his defense of our history.
