FLASHBACK: Obama Called Baltimore Rioters 'Thugs' In 2015, Yet The Media Didn't Call Him Racist

One of the most telling ‘qualities’ of a Leftist is the ability to be a gargantuan hypocrite without ever becoming self-aware enough to realize it.
As fires still burned in Minneapolis following a couple nights’ worth of looting and rioting in response to the death of 46-year-old George Floyd, allegedly at the hands of a city police officer, President Donald Trump took to Twitter as he always does to voice his opinion about the unwarranted mayhem.
“These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!” he wrote.
You’ll note that the word ‘thugs’ is capitalized. Obviously, the president wanted to draw attention to that descriptor. And by any reason understanding of American vernacular, his characterization is 100 percent spot-on.
Other words the president could have chosen to convey the same description include hoodlum, gangster, hood, hooligan, mobster, ruffian and punk. But he chose ‘thug.’
And for that, he was accosted by Left-wing language police who believe that tearing into Trump is a lot more important than, say, criticizing the thugs who are burning down businesses and destroying police stations in Minneapolis.
It should be noted that the “armed white men in Michigan” were a) protesting being locked down for no good reason by an authoritarian governor; and b) weren’t burning businesses or looting stores. So, there’s that. And former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s hatred for police is irrational and unwarranted.
But…a ‘substitute for the N-word?’ Seriously?
What happens when a black man uses the word to describe rioters and looters who destroy private property? Because that’s exactly what then-President Barack Obama did in 2015 to describe the destruction in Baltimore after police officers were suspected of being responsible for the death of Freddie Gray (all charges were eventually dropped, by the way).
Black president uses the word “thug” and it’s okay. White president named Trump uses it and suddenly it’s a secret racial epithet. Right.
What’s even more telling is that Obama doubled down on his use of the term when he got oh-so-gentle pushback.
USA Today reported at the time:
In discussing the riots Tuesday, Obama assailed the “criminals and thugs who tore up the place,” and described them as a distraction from the real issues of police brutality.
Some critics ascribe racial connotations to the word “thug” — Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake walked back the term earlier this week — but Obama doesn’t agree, officials said.
“At the same time, we saw a small minority of individuals engaged in other activity that was not responsible that is clearly a crime,” Earnest added. “And when you’re looting up a convenience store or you’re throwing a cinder block at a police officer, you’re engaging in thuggish behavior and that’s why the President used that word.”
No problem. Understood. But if it was okay then, it’s okay now.
Because the reality is, there’s never any good reason to destroy entire city blocks and crush the livelihoods of fellow citizens who did nothing to provoke anyone.
