On Monday evening, four St. Louis police officers were shot by rioters after a peaceful protest turned violent.
The news broke on Tuesday morning when the police department tweeted that the officers involved had been taken to the hospital. None of them had life threatening injuries.
Check out what Breitbart reported:
The chaos in St. Louis followed continued protests Monday in Missouri over the death of George Floyd and police treatment of African Americans, with gatherings also held in Kansas City and Jefferson City.
On Monday afternoon, several hundred people rallied peacefully outside the justice center in downtown St. Louis, including Mayor Lyda Krewson and St. Louis Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards. Protestors later walked to the Gateway Arch National Park and then onto nearby Interstate 64.
But later Monday, protesters gathered in front of police headquarters, where officers fired tear gas. Some protesters smashed windows at a downtown 7-11 store and stole items from inside before the building was set on fire.
The incident happened shortly after President Trump unloaded on state governors across the country, telling them to get tough on the violent looters and rioters.
“Most of you are weak,” President Trump said to the governors on the call. “You have to arrest people. You have to dominate. If you don’t dominate you’re wasting your time.
“They’re going to run over you, you’re going to look like a bunch of jerks. You have to dominate,” he added.
President Trump continued by telling governors that they needed to arrest rioters and looters and give them harsh punishments so others don't do the same.
“You’ve got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you’ll never see this stuff again,” he said. “We’re doing it in Washington, D.C. We’re going to do something that people haven’t seen before.”
Later on Monday, the President addressed the nation from the Rose Garden and revealed that he was taking action into his own hands to stop the "acts of domestic terror" from “professional anarchists, violent mobs, arsonists, looters, criminals, rioters, Antifa, and others."
“I am taking immediate presidential action to stop the violence and restore security and safety in America,” President Trump said. “I am mobilizing all federal resources civilian and military to stop the rioting and your Second Amendment rights.”
“First we are ending the riots and lawlessness that has spread throughout our country. We will end it now,” the President continued. “Today I have strongly recommended to every governor to deploy the National Guard in sufficient numbers that we dominate the streets. Mayors and governors must establish an overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will quickly deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”
The president said that the riots in Washington, D.C., was a “total disgrace,” and revealed he was deploying “thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel and law enforcement officers to stop the rioting, looting, vandalism, assaults, and the wanton destruction of property.”
“We are putting everybody on warning: Our seven o’clock curfew will be strictly enforced. Those who threaten innocent life and property will be arrested, detained, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the President continued. “I want the organizers of this terror to be on notice that you will face severe criminal penalties and lengthy sentences in jail. This includes Antifa and others who are leading instigators of this violence.”
“We have one beautiful law. And once that is restored and fully restored, we will help you, we will help your business, and we will help your family,” he continued. “America is founded upon the rule of law. It is the foundation of our prosperity, our freedom, and our very way of life. But where there is no law, there is no opportunity. Where there is no justice, there is no liberty. Where there is no safety, there is no future.”
“We must never give in to anger or hatred. If malice or violence reigns, then none of us is free,” the President concluded. “I take these actions today with firm resolve and with a true and passionate love for our country. By far, our greatest days lie ahead.”
