He Got (Ground) Game: Trump Campaign Reaches Milestone of 100 Million Voters

The Trump Train was mighty in 2016 and, as history has proven, it became an unstoppable juggernaut, propelling the unlikeliest of candidates into the White House after crushing his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton in an electoral college beatdown she still hasn’t accepted.

And while ‘the polls’ tell us that the Democratic Party’s 2020 nominee, Joe Biden – who doesn’t know where he is or what to say sans a teleprompter half the time – is leading nationally, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest otherwise.

One piece of that evidence: Trump campaign outreach.

The president’s ground game has been spectacular this year, as reported by the New York Post:

President Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee passed an enormous milestone this week — making contact with their 100 millionth voter through door knocking and phone banking.

The RNC says it has knocked on the doors of 12 million potential voters in battleground states since mid-June — that’s around 1 million a week — while the Biden campaign has knocked on zero.

The wildly different door-to-door strategies could make all the difference in races up and down the ballot in states like New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Michigan, which were won by razor-thin margins in 2016.

Where did the Trump campaign get its strategy? From the guy who spied on the president.

“We are not secretive about our strategy when it comes to our field program. We copied Barack Obama,” RNC chief of staff Richard Walters told the NY Post.

“People made fun of him in 2012 for being a community organizer, but he organized himself into a second term,” Walters said of the Obama ground game operation. “It’s interesting to me that Biden, who was on the winning ticket in 2008 and 2012 and was elected based on this strategy, has decided to forgo that strategy.

“We saw it work for Obama in 2012 and we saw it work for us in 2016. It’s mind-blowing that Biden isn’t doing it.”

The Trump campaign has deployed 2,000 paid staff out to 22 states targeted for victory and has enlisted an additional 2 million volunteers. Officials say they want to reach or top Obama’s 2.2 million record of staff before the November election.

Walters said anyone who was hired or who volunteers is required to read the book “Groundbreakers: How Obama’s 2.2 Million Volunteers Transformed Campaigning in America,” which analyzes how Obama’s field strategy turned into victory in 2008 and 2012.

It appears to be working for the Trump campaign: Staffers reached the 100 millionth voter in North Carolina this past week, or more than triple the 2016 campaign’s ground game tally.

But the Biden campaign, too mindful of what it would look like spreading fear porn about COVID-19 while sending staffers into the field to campaign in person, has instead relied on texts, phone calls, and scripted ‘virtual’ campaign events.

“Democrats’ field programs are crushing Republicans in key metrics like vote by mail request and voter registration, and we’re reaching out to voters in a way that’s safe, effective and isn’t going to get folks sick,” David Bergstein, the DNC’s director of battleground state communications, told the Post, calling the Trump campaign strategy “repulsive.”

Yeah, okay. We’ll see come November.
