Well, it appears as though Minneapolis’ little experiment with utopia is over and things didn’t quite work out as planned, as a state judge has now ordered the city council to come back to reality.
In response to a lawsuit filed by residents, the judge has ordered the city to hire more police officers to bring Minneapolis into compliance with its own charter.
The Washington Examiner reports:
Hennepin County Judge Jamie Anderson mandated local leaders employ 730 sworn officers by June 30, 2022, after it was found that the projected number of police officers for June 1, 2022, 669, was in violation of the city’s charter, which stipulates the area must have 0.0017 licensed peace officers per resident.
Mayor Jacob Frey and the city council were ordered to “take any and all necessary action to ensure that they fund a police force.”
In August 2020, residents Cathy Spann, Sondra Samuels, Don Samuels, Audua Pugh, Jonathan Lundberg, Aimee Lundberg, Georgianna Yantos, and Julie Oden sued city authorities over rising crime following the death of George Floyd.
“It is undisputed that: the crime rate in Minneapolis has increased since the killing of Floyd, one or more Petitioners have suffered injuries from that increase in crime, Ms. Lundberg has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the Court previously found that that the Petitioners have the standing to bring this mandamus action,” Anderson wrote on Thursday.
The Minneapolis Police Department had about 740 officers with 66 on leave at various times last year. But reports have said the department experienced an exodus of cops following the riots spurred by Floyd’s death that lasted off and on throughout 2020.
“Every night in the Jordan neighborhood, on any given block from Emerson to Lowry, you hear gunshots every night,” Span said when she announced the suit, according to FOX9.
“What do we do? Who do we call if the city council says we’re going to dismantle and defund your police department?” she asked.
“The department says it only has 638 officers available to work — roughly 200 fewer than usual. An unprecedented number of officers quit or went on extended medical leave after Floyd’s death and the unrest that followed, which included the burning of a police precinct,” the Associated Press reported in February, adding that the city was planning on spending $6.4 million to recruit new officers.
This comes after these same Democratic morons voted in December 2020 to cut funding for the department.
“An unprecedented number of officers quit or went on an extended medical leave — many for PTSD claims — after Floyd’s death, rioting that led to the burning of a police precinct, and calls to end the city’s Police Department,” the Star Tribune reported.
“In the months since then, some residents have begged city leaders to hire additional officers, saying they’re waiting longer for responses to emergency calls amid a dramatic uptick in violent crime. Others have encouraged elected officials to dismantle the department, saying police haven’t proven effective at reducing crime,” the paper added.
There is no substitute for a police department, period — not unless you like chaos. While most humans are inherently good, police departments don’t exist for those people, they exist for the minority of violent, vicious predators who destroy civil society.
