Michigan Democrat Says Trump Saved Her Life By Recommending Hydroxychloroquine

On Monday, Joe Scarborough and wife Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC lambasted President Donald Trump for continuing to push the noted antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for coronavirus.

Suggesting that the president was somehow going to benefit financially from the massive sales you would expect if the drug were suddenly put into use on a widespread basis, Brzezinski also complained that over the weekend, the president ‘refused’ to allow his chief COVID medical adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci, discuss hydroxychloroquine.

“Dr. Fauci wasn’t allowed to talk about what he feels is important to say about this drug that the president keeps pushing. A lot of people would say, follow the money. There’s got to be some sort of financial tie to someone somewhere that has the president pushing this repeatedly,” she said.

“Why is MSNBC, why is CNN, why is FOX, why is any network running these press conferences where he keeps talking about an unproven drug that might work for malaria, might work for Lupus, doesn’t work for this?” Scarborough also whined.

Well, then, that settles it — right? Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski have spoken. The drug doesn’t work and Trump’s only hawking it for the dough. Got it.

Except that someone who you wouldn’t think would ever credit the president for anything just gave him credit for saving her life. From coronavirus. After pushing for wider use of hydroxychloroquine. Which she says saved her life.

The Detroit Free Press reported:

A Democratic state representative from Detroit is crediting hydroxychloroquine — and Republican President Donald Trump who touted the drug — for saving her in her battle with the coronavirus.

State Rep. Karen Whitsett, who learned Monday she has tested positive for COVID-19, said she started taking hydroxychloroquine on March 31, prescribed by her doctor, after both she and her husband sought treatment for a range of symptoms on March 18.

The Democratic lawmaker said she began feeling better in “less than two hours” after receiving her first dose of the drug. She said she had been suffering from shortness of breath — the key symptom of coronavirus infection — as well as swollen lymph nodes and what she said resembled a sinus infection.

Whitsett said she knew about “the wonders” of the drug after a previous bout with Lyme disease, but added she would never have thought to request it for coronavirus if she hadn’t heard the president talking about it. Nor, she said, would her doctor have prescribed it for that but for Trump’s insistence the FDA issue an emergency approval for limited use of the drug to treat COVID-19.

“It has a lot to do with the president … bringing it up,” Whitsett said. “He is the only person who has the power to make it a priority.”

Asked if she believes the president may have saved her life, she responded, “Yes, I do. I do thank him for that.”

Even though everyone at MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” knows Trump is just ‘in it for the money.’

Meanwhile, another political nemesis, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, requested that the president send his state more of the drug after it has repeatedly shown promise.

“There has been anecdotal evidence that it is promising; that’s why we’re going ahead,” Cuomo said.

Some of that evidence has come from a Los Angeles doctor who said he has successfully treated the most severe COVID patients with a combination of hydroxychloroquine and zinc.
