A fast-growing number of health experts including doctors and scientists are signing on to a petition demanding that pandemic-related lockdowns in the U.S. and UK be lifted immediately because, as Sweden has proved, they are unnecessary (and unnecessarily debilitating to societies).
The petition, which has garnered more than 6,000 signatures, includes professors from many of the world’s leading universities, such as Dr. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University, who was one of the authors of an open letter sent with the petition, along with Dr. Martin Kulldorff of Harvard University and Dr. Jay Bhattachary of Stanford.
It declares that social distancing and mask mandates are causing ‘damaging physical and mental health impacts.’
The petition, dubbed the Great Barrington Declaration after the town in Massachusetts where it was written, has been signed by close to 54,000 members of the public at time of writing, as well as over 2600 medical and public health scientists and around 3500 medical practitioners.
“Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal,” it says, adding, “Keeping these [lockdown] measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.”
“Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health,” says the declaration.
Continuing, the document notes: “The results (to name a few) include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular [heart] disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health – leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden.
“Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice,” it adds. “Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal, it concludes, explaining that “Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold.”
The declaration also notes, “Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home.”
Significantly, the expert signatories note that current asinine lockdowns are not only harmful physically, mentally, and economically, they prevent the vital “herd immunity” that likely has occurred in Sweden (which never locked down) and which is required elsewhere so that COVID-19 burns out.
“Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity,” says the declaration.
The document is along the same lines as what President Donald Trump said in a video at the White House taken after he returned from a short stay at Walter Reed Medical Center, where he began treatment for the virus.
“Don’t be afraid of COVID. Don’t let it dominate your life,” the president — who should know, obviously — said.
And for the record, the declaration falls in line with previous research that says continued lockdowns are only going to cause more death, not prevent it.
