New Jersey's Dem governor praises Trump virus response: 'Been there for us’

President Donald Trump doesn’t get much praise at all from Democrats and that includes many Democrat governors during the coronavirus pandemic.

But he has gotten credit for having done what he could for states as they began to deal with growing numbers of COVID-19 patients especially those particularly hard-hit, like New Jersey.

In an interview with Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday,” Gov. Phil Murphy said the president and his team “have been there for us” when New Jersey needed them, bringing in vital supplies and other assistance to help mitigate the disease.

Following an Oval Office meeting with the president that went well and that Murphy complimented, Wallace asked if the “good relationship” with Trump “has made a difference in terms of what New Jersey has gotten.”

“You met with President Trump this week and I think it’s fair to say that you’re getting along better with the president than almost any other Democratic governor,” Wallace said.

“He announced this week he’s sending New Jersey half a million new tests, 750,000 swabs. Do you think that your good, personal relationship with the president has made a difference in terms of what New Jersey has gotten?”

Murphy notes that he and Trump have found “common ground.”

“Let there be no doubt about it,” he said. “The president knows New Jersey. He and his team have been extremely responsive in our hour of need, whether it was ventilators, as you rightfully point out, we’ve got a huge amount of supplies to test. We’re getting personal protective equipment just the other day, confirmed direct to our nursing homes. We just announced $1.7 billion into our hospital systems.

“Listen, I think we’ve been able to find common ground again based on the science, based on the facts and the reality and in our hour of need,” he continued. “I have to thank the president and his team. They have been there for us. And I appreciate that enormously.”

Earlier, President Trump received praise from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, another Democrat with whom he’s had a lot of political differences.

“His team is on it. They have been responsive late at night, early in the morning. And thus far, they have been doing everything that they can do, and I want to say thank you, and I want to say that I appreciate it,” Cuomo said in March.
