O'Rourke: When We Confiscate Guns, Americans Will Gladly Comply

Last week, Democratic presidential candidate and failed senatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke announced his support for gun confiscation.

"How do you address fears that the government will confiscate semi-automatics?" a reporter questioned.

O’Rourke replied: “I want to be really clear, that’s exactly what we are going to do.”

Over the weekend, O'Rourke was asked to elaborate on his plan to confiscate guns from law abiding gun owners. A reporter in Manchester, New Hamphsire asked the 2020 candidate if he would have law enforcement go "door to door" to confiscate weapons. O'Rourke responded by assuring that gun owners would gladly comply with the law and turn them in theirselves.

“I don’t see the law enforcement going door to door. I see Americans complying with the law,” O'Rourke said.

“I see us working with gun owners, non-gun owners, local, county, state, federal law enforcement to come up with the best possible solution. I have yet to meet an owner of an AR-15 who thinks it’s OK that we have these kind of mass killings in this country,” he added.

He later noted, “How do you — how do we enforce any law? There’s a significant reliance on people complying with the law. You know that a law is not created in a vacuum.”

It's unclear how O'Rourke thinks gun owners will gladly hang over their guns.

O'Rourke's rhetoric regarding guns has been increasingly dramatic over the past couple months. During an interview on CNN, O'Rourke blurted the 'F' word in response to the mass shooting in Texas.

Should Rep. Omar Be Removed From Congress?

O'Rourke joined Dana Bash of CNN who was filling in for host Jake Tapper. Bash started by playing a clip of O'Rourke saying the 'f' word which was bleeped out at an event where the presidential candidate was discussing gun control.

“The rhetoric that we’ve used, the thoughts and prayers that you just referred to, it has done nothing to stop the epidemic of gun violence, to protect our kids, our families, our fellow Americans in public places,” O’Rourke said to Bash. “At a Walmart in El Paso where 22 were killed. In Sutherland Springs, in a church. One or two a day all over this country, 100 killed daily in the United States of America.”

“We’re averaging about 300 mass shootings a year,” O’Rourke added. He then dropped the f bomb on live TV. “So yes, this is fucked up. If we don’t call it out for what it is, if we’re not able to speak clearly, if we’re not able to act decisively, we’ll continue to have this kind of bloodshed in America. And I cannot accept that. We’re going to speak as defiantly and as strongly as we can but we’re also going to take action. Universal background checks, red flag laws, end of the sales of weapons of war and buying those AK-47s and AR-15s back so they cannot be used against our fellow Americans.”

He then continued by discussing his proposed "gun buyback" program: “The challenge is so grave, the threat is so great, we can’t meet it with only half the country. We have to bring in Republicans, independents, Democrats, and save lives or else be complicit in the continuing carnage we see in America. I won’t be part of that.”
