Pelosi-Backed Bill Would Require Some Americans To Pay Back Their Government Stimulus Payment

Among the many egregious stipulations inside of Nancy Pelosi’s legislation introduced for the coronavirus, one addition stands out in particular, which outlines the Democrats’ intentions to make some American citizens pay back their government stimulus check. The bill would allow the federal government to send out a total of $1,500 rather than the initial $1,200 offered, but the extra couple hundred wouldn’t come without specific conditions.
Any individual who made over $75,000 in 2018, or any couple filing jointly who made over $150,000 the same year would be required to pay back their checks that they received to the federal government.
Check out what Politico reported below:
“Democrats want to further plump the direct payments that would go out to Americans under the bill, proposing $1,500 per person, instead of the $1,200 on the table under the Senate measure laid out Sunday.”
“Unlike the latest plan from Senate Republicans, however, higher earners would have to pay back part or all of the assistance over three years if their taxable income is $75,000 or more for a single filer or $150,000 or more for couples filing jointly,” the report adds.
The bill would also be doled out to more people, those “to anyone with a tax ID number, and to retirees and people who are unemployed, rather than just to people who file taxes for 2019 or get Social Security.”
Increases the amount of money being offered to individuals to $1,500, and up to $7,500 for a family of five. The same GOP income thresholds in the GOP bill would apply — $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples, but the benefit would be available to anyone with an individual taxpayer identification number, retirees and unemployed individuals.
Throughout the past few days since Nancy Pelosi introduced her ideas, the high-ranking Democrat has been hit with scrutiny from a number of Republican Senators, and even President Trump called her out on the issue. In a tweet posted late Monday night, Trump promised to veto the legislation if it happened to be passed, and he also claimed that no Republican representative would approve of it.
“This will never be approved by me, or any other Republican,” he said in the tweet about a story on the Democrats’ ridiculous demands.
