On Thursday, President Trump slammed former FBI officials for committing “treason” for potentially illegally spying on his campaign during the 2016 election.
The comments by the President were made at a White House event form American farmers. During the event Peter Alexander of NBC mentioned one of Trump’s tweets where he stated that spying on his campaign during the election was “treason.”
“Who specifically are you accusing of treason?” Alexander asked.
“Well, I think a number of people,” President Trump replied. “You look at [Former FBI Director James] Comey, if you look at [Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew] McCabe, if you look at people — hot people — probably higher than that, if you look at [Former FBI Agent Peter] Strzok, if you look at his lover, [Former DOJ Lawyer] Lisa Page.”
“[Strzok] talked about the ‘insurance policy’ just in case Hillary loses, and that didn’t work out too well for them,” the President continued while referencing texts between FBI lovers Strzok and Page. “‘Should she lose, we’ll have an insurance policy, we’ll get this guy out of office.’ That’s what they said and that’s what they meant. That’s treason. That’s treason.”
Former FBI officials have been feeling the heat in recent weeks and some of these officials like fired FBI Director James Comey for example, have been lashing out.
Last Friday, Comey sent out a bizarre tweet where he targeted Attorney General Bill Barr for “sliming his own Department.”
“The AG should stop sliming his own Department. If there are bad facts, show us, or search for them professionally and then tell us what you found. An AG must act like the leader of the Department of Justice, an organization based on truth. Donald Trump has enough spokespeople,” the former FBI director said.
He later slammed President Trump in another tweet.
“The president claiming the FBI’s investigation was “TREASON“ reminds me that a Russian once said, “A lie told often enough becomes the truth.” That shouldn’t happen in America. Who will stand up?” he said.
Comey is most likely upset because Attorney General Barr recently assigned U.S. Attorney John Durham to investigate potential FISA abuses along with the origins of the Russia probe. This has a direct connection to Comey considering he was the head of the FBI at the time the Russia probe began.
If Barr and Durham find that the FBI lead by Comey abused the FISA application to illegally obtain a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign, Comey could potentially face jail time.
On Thursday evening, President Trump made the shocking move to issue a memo which would give Attorney General Bill Barr the authority to declassify documents relating to the potential illegal spying of the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.
“Today, at the request and recommendation of the Attorney General of the United States, President Donald J. Trump directed the intelligence community to quickly and fully cooperate with the Attorney General’s investigation into surveillance activities during the 2016 Presidential election,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders stated.
“The Attorney General has also been delegated full and complete authority to declassify information pertaining to this investigation, in accordance with the long-established standards for handling classified information. Today’s action will help ensure that all Americans learn the truth about the events that occurred, and the actions that were taken, during the last Presidential election and will restore confidence in our public institutions.”
In the memo, the President ordered the intelligence community to fully cooperate with the attorney general. “The heads of elements of the intelligence community… and the heads of each department or agency that includes an element of the intelligence community shall promptly provide such assistance and information as the Attorney General may request in connection with that review.” the statement said.
