If there is one good thing about the crackdown by the big tech overlords on smaller competitor platforms, it’s this: Their tyranny will jumpstart a long-overdue need for conservatives, independents, and libertarians to create their own parallel economy and social media and communications infrastructure.
Over the summer, as Twitter took the unprecedented step to censor and fact-check the leader of the free world, not to mention the country where the platform was built and is based, conservatives began migrating by the hundreds of thousands to Gab and Parler.
And in recent weeks, as Twitter’s crackdown has extended to bans on top conservative figures including President Donald Trump, as well as shaving followers, the exodus from the left-wing platform has only increased.
In fact, the rush to Gab is so profound that platform developers said at one point over the weekend it was gaining 10,000 new users an hour, straining the ability for servers to handle the influx.
Gab, a more conservative-friendly alternative social media platform to Twitter, claimed Saturday it is gaining 10,000 users an hour in the wake of Twitter permanently suspending President Trump’s account.
Trump has also been blocked from posting on Facebook and Instagram — at least until his term ends.
“The traffic just keeps growing hang tight, even more servers on the way today,” Gab CEO Andrew Torba wrote on the site Saturday.
Late Tuesday, Torba tweeted that the platform had grown by 500,000 people to more than 12 million. The platform bills itself a “social network that champions free speech, individual liberty and the new free flow of information online.”
“Our traffic is up 753% in the past 24 hours. Tens of millions of visits,” Gab said in a social media statement, responding to a user who said he wasn’t able to make an account.
“Please be patient, we aren’t going anywhere. Spinning up 10 new servers tonight. This takes time,” Gab added.
To the earlier point of building our own social media infrastructure, President Trump announced last week he is “negotiating with various other sites, and will have a big announcement soon, while we also look at the possibilities of building out our own platform in the near future. We will not be SILENCED!”
