Top House Republicans Want Probe into DC Mayor, Violence Against Trump Supporters

Several House Republicans are imploring majority Democrats to conduct hearings into violence directed at supporters of President Donald Trump who, last time we checked, were still American citizens deserving of equal protection under the law.

The call comes following several attacks against the president’s backers over the weekend after they attended the “Million MAGA March” in which one observer, Bennie Johnson of chief creative officer for Talking Points USA and a Newsmax TV host, said there was easily that many who attended.

The attacks, as they always are, were posted online and went viral, so there’s plenty of evidence.

GOP lawmakers also are demanding to know why Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, didn’t authorize her police department to do more to protect Trump supporters and really, just any American who has a different political viewpoint, while authorizing the creation of “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”

Fox News has more:

The top Republicans on the House Oversight Committee are demanding Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney to hold a hearing to examine the violence against supporters of President Trump after the “Million MAGA March” in Washington, D.C. last weekend.

They are also calling for answers from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, claiming her “silence” on the issue is part of a “broader pattern of viewpoint discrimination.”

House Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer, R-Ky., Rep. Jody Hice, R-Ga., and Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, penned a letter to Maloney, D-N.Y., after more than 20 people were arrested last weekend amid violent clashes between Trump supporters and counterprotesters in D.C.

“We respectfully request a hearing on the violence directed at supporters of President Trump on November 14, 2020,” they wrote to Maloney. “These supporters were exercising their First Amendment right to peacefully assemble within the District of Columbia.”

“The failure of the city’s leaders to afford basic protections to persons who may hold different political viewpoints from their own appears to be another concerning example of viewpoint discrimination in the District,” the GOP lawmakers added.

“Despite the violence, the mainstream media and liberal establishment were quick to minimize the seriousness of the use of violence against Trump supporters by deriding them for failing to wear masks in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, and asserting that they were infiltrated by ‘white nationalists, conspiracy theorists, and far right activists,” the wrote.

“City leaders have remained silent on the violence,” they continued. “This growing level of violence directed at others for holding different views is simply unacceptable.”

While this request is commendable and while hearings do need to take place, we’re predicting right now that the same party that has vilified the president and his supporters for years as sub-human ‘Nazis’ and ‘fascists’ is privately cheering the assaults and mistreatment.
