Trump shared a petition on Twitter calling for Stone, who was a brief campaign official caught up in the Russia investigation, to be pardoned.

Stone is scheduled to serve 40 months in prison after being convicted last year on charges of obstruction of justice, false statements, and witness tampering, which all stemmed from Robert Mueller's Russia probe, Fox News reported.

Trump retweeted a post about a growing petition to urge the president to give Stone a full and unconditional pardon.

"IT’S TIME TO #PardonRogerStone," Trump's retweet read.

Here's the tweet that the president retweeted:

Stone appeared on the Fox Business program "Lou Dobbs Tonight" on Friday and asked Trump to commute his sentence or to grant him a federal pardon.

"I think this is a death sentence," Stone said. "I don’t think I will live to see my appeal succeed, which is why I have been very forthright about my praying that the president acts, either with a commutation of my sentence so I may follow my appeal and win vindication or of course, a pardon. That’s completely within his power, but I would call on him to do it on humanitarian grounds as an act of both mercy and justice."

“This is Soviet-era justice. It’s Soviet-style justice. The idea that an appeal would require 12 months, that you and your family could have been tortured throughout all of this over what is everyone acknowledges a — an absolutely ridiculous charge,” Dobbs said, responding to Stone’s claim that it could take a year for him to be exonerated in a new trial.

The president has made public comments several times in recent months hinting that he thinks Stone was mistreated.

Just a few months ago, Trump confirmed that he believed the FBI illegally targeted Stone and said the FBI going after Stone “will go down as the greatest political crime in history.”

On Twitter, Trump also responded to a tweet from Charlie Kirk, the founder and head of TPUSA, a conservative movement for college students.

"Never forget: Roger Stone will serve more time in prison than 99% of these rioters destroying America All because he supports Donald Trump. This isn’t justice. RT for a full pardon of Roger Stone!" Kirk wrote.

Trump responded: "No. Roger was a victim of a corrupt and illegal Witch Hunt, one which will go down as the greatest political crime in history. He can sleep well at night!"

Trump's line saying "he can sleep well at night," referring to Stone, was another sign to many that he could be seriously considering a pardon for Stone.

Time will tell what happens next, but the president has made it clear that he's at least considering using his executive powers to help Stone.
