Trump Unloads On Dems For Making the Coronavirus Package About the Green New Deal

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump hammered the Democrats over their politicization of the coronavirus relief package as they made the stimulus bill about partisan issues including the Green New Deal.

“This is not about the ridiculous Green New Deal,” Trump tweeted. “It is about putting our great workers and companies BACK TO WORK!”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had similar comments while he was speaking on the Senate floor.

“Democrats won’t let us fund hospitals or save small businesses until they get to dust off the Green New Deal,” McConnell said. “This has got to stop. And today is the day it has to stop. The country is out of time.”

On Tuesday the President also tweeted, "Congress must approve the deal, without all of the nonsense, today. The longer it takes, the harder it will be to start up our economy. Our workers will be hurt!"

The Daily Caller reports:

Alabama Senator Doug Jones was the lone Democrat to vote with Republicans on Monday.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi entered her own version of the bill, which was criticized for including billions in spending on issues not-related to the coronavirus. Of note, the Pelosi legislation included provisions for green energy tax credits and new fuel emissions regulations for airlines. It will cost an estimated $2.5 trillion, roughly double of the Senate’s package.

Both the Senate and House bills contain direct payments to American workers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, a major priority for the White House in recent days. House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats originally supported McConnell’s bill, but objected Sunday over a lack of language prohibiting companies from using bailout capital for stock buybacks.

Senator Lindsey Graham also unleashed on Democrats on Monday as he vowed that Republicans were not going to give into the Democrats' “ideological wish list."

“I think it’s disgraceful, it’s irresponsible and it’s not going to work,” Graham said of the Democrats’ decision to block the COVID-19 relief bill. “We’re not going to do this. So I think people on our side are willing to go big. For republicans it’s not so easy in one day to spend all we’re going to spend in a single year. We’re going to spend about $1.8 trillion … That’s big. I’d like to go smart. If you’re going to go big, you need to be smart, right? And you don’t need to go crazy.”

He continued: “The only reason we’re not voting on this bill is because the House hijacked this process. Nancy Pelosi tried to control impeachment. She tried to set the terms of the debate for the United States Senate and the impeachment trial before she would send over the impeachment articles. Remember that whole debacle?”

The South Carolina senator added: “They’re literally holding hostage the relief for doctors and nurses, for towns and cities, for businesses who’ve had to lay off their workers, for same-day voting, for corporate diversity, for a $15 an hour minimum wage … they’re using this sad day in America to enact policies that wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell getting through the United States Senate and they see this as a moment for them.

“We see this as a moment for you. They see this as an opportunity to do things they couldn’t do without the country being on fire,” he concluded.
