UH-OH, DEMS: Republican Wins Mayoral Race in Heavily Hispanic Blue Texas City

It’s way too early to predict how the midterm elections are going to go.

Or is it?

Maybe not.

A local race in a blue, Hispanic-majority (and by a lot) city in Texas won handily by Joe Biden may portend the near-future of congressional Democrats, and it isn’t good (for them).

McAllen, Texas, has a new mayor, and for once, a larger-than-average U.S. city won’t be led by a Democrat.

Fox News reports:

Republicans celebrated Javier Villalobos’ narrow win in the mayor’s race in McAllen, Texas, on Saturday even though the race is technically nonpartisan.

“Javier Villalobos is a proven leader who cares deeply about the people of the Rio Grande Valley. Congratulations on becoming the next Mayor of McAllen!” Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wrote on Facebook.

Villalobos, an attorney, was appointed to the Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board by Abbott in 2018 and is the former chair of the Hidalgo County GOP.

So — how is it possible that this Democratic, Hispanic stronghold went for a Republican mayoral candidate?

The Epoch Times has the answer, even though the outlet isn’t citing this as the reason why Villalobos won:

McAllen, located at the southern tip of The Lone Star State in the Rio Grande Valley, is a hub for illegal border crossings.

The city is trying hard to balance the benefit of border trade and pressure on the budget caused by the inflow of illegal immigrants.

After it became apparent that Joe Biden was going to the White House, citizens of Central American countries began flocking back towards the U.S. border; they had largely stopped coming after then-President Donald Trump and his administration had put in place — having been fought the entire time by Democrats, left-wing groups, the courts, and some Republicans — rock-solid border enforcement mechanisms.

On the campaign trail, Biden’s handlers told him to promise open-door immigration policies via pledges to reverse Trump’s executive orders and halt his border wall; that was akin to a ‘Y’all come on in’ wink-and-nod from the Demcoratic candidate.

And come, they have, in record numbers, many thousands of them flooding in through Texas — especially heavily Hispanic communities like McAllen.

“Amazing news! McAllen, Texas is a major border town of 140,000 people. 85% Hispanic — and just elected a Republican mayor. The macro realignment accelerates in South Texas, and elsewhere, as Hispanics rally to America First,” former Trump 2020 campaign adviser and current Newsmax TV co-host Steve Cortes wrote on Twitter.

He added: “The macro realignment accelerates in South Texas, and elsewhere, as Hispanics rally to America First: Strong Borders, Economic Nationalism, Pro-Police.”

This isn’t speculation or political hyperbole. In March, Fox News host Tucker Carlson reported that an analysis of 2020 voting patterns in Texas border counties where illegal immigration is the worst found a massive increase in support for then-President Trump, as this outlet notes:

At the start of the segment, Carlson pointed out how two primarily Hispanic border communities in southern Texas swung heavily for President Trump in 2020 after going indisputably to Hillary Clinton in 2016.

He noted that these two regions are among two of the poorest in the country but they turned to Trump because of his strong immigration policies that ultimately helped their communities.

Carlson sarcastically quipped that the major shift from Democrat to Trump in these communities must mean they’re “Qanon people.”

He then explained that the likely scenario is that the people living along the border in Texas support strong immigration policies like Trump’s and don’t want uncontrolled illegal immigration.

That’s a spot-on analysis, as the McAllen mayoral race proves.
