California Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff revealed over the weekend that he would “favor doing away with the Electoral College system.”

During an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Schiff made a slew of controversial comments about the election and Electoral College.

“I think we’re better off focusing on discrete amendments to the Constitution to overturn Citizens United and make sure that we can have elections untampered or uninfluenced by excessive expenditures and dark money,” Schiff said.

He added, “And I would favor doing away with the Electoral College system.”

Schiff said that he supports a rewrite of the U.S. Constitution and amendments that would abolish the Electoral College, but he claimed that today’s Republican Party would likely hijack the process.

The California Democratic congressman said he would prefer to use “discrete amendments” to the Constitution that would overturn controversial money-in-politics Supreme Court rulings like Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.

Maher said any changes to the Founding Fathers’ framework is difficult because many Americans believe the constitution was “literally delivered by Jesus.”

“I think we’re better off focusing on discrete amendments to the Constitution to overturn Citizens United and make sure that we can have elections untampered or uninfluenced by excessive expenditures and dark money. And I would favor doing away with the Electoral College system,” Schiff said.

Schiff complained that rewriting and completely overhauling the Constitution wouldn’t likely work today because Senate Republicans such as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Utah’s Mike Lee would likely be the people tasked with such an effort.

“This is the problem, I don’t have any confidence frankly that we could improve on the word product of the framers with the crowd we have today. So I like it in theory,” Schiff added.

This is such an unpopular idea that even the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had previously spoken out against this.

While speaking at the University of Chicago earlier this year, Ginsburg said Americans should focus on change that is realistic rather than going after something as radical as abolishing the system used for hundreds of years to decide the winner of presidential elections in the United States.

“It’s largely a dream because our Constitution is hard to amend,” Ginsburg said. “I know that from experience.”

Democrats have become even more triggered by the Electoral College since President Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election despite not winning the popular vote.

Generally speaking, the Electoral College is a check to ensure that all 50 states — ranging from the biggest to smallest — have an equal say in electing the president.

Otherwise, liberal states like New York and California would pretty much determine the outcome of presidential elections given their massive populations.
