President Donald Trump tweeted Sunday that he is preparing to designate ‘Antifa’ a domestic terrorist organization, which means anyone breaking laws and rioting under the guise of the organization can be held criminally liable under a range of national security laws.
Members allegedly associated with the loosely-organized group have been accused of taking part in violent protests around the country in the wake of the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd last week.
Floyd died during an arrest after former police officer Derek Chauvin held him down to the pavement with his knee for several minutes, during which time Floyd became unresponsive and died.
Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
On Saturday during a press conference to discuss the riots, Attorney General William Barr said it was evident that many of them were being infiltrated by anarchists using “Antifa-like tactics.”
“Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agenda,” he said. “In many places, it appears the violence is planned, organized, and driven by anarchistic and far-left extremists, using Antifa-like tactics, many of whom travel from out of state to promote the violence.”
Barr made clear “it is a federal crime to cross state lines or to use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting. We will enforce these laws.”
That threat was echoed by President Trump.
“Crossing State lines to incite violence is a FEDERAL CRIME! Liberal Governors and Mayors must get MUCH tougher or the Federal Government will step in and do what has to be done, and that includes using the unlimited power of our Military and many arrests. Thank you!” he wrote on Twitter.
