Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was a hit at the Conservative Political Action Convention on Friday, as he addressed a raucous, appreciative crowd in his home state.

Seen as a rising star and a legitimate presidential contender (in the mold of Donald Trump) at some point in the future, DeSantis struck a number of familiar chords in his speech in Orlando as he touted his accomplishments, especially when it came to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are stronger as a state and much happier as a people because of this leadership,” the governor said. “Florida has lower per capita COVID mortality than the national average, and lower than 27 other states.

“Our unemployment rate is lower than the national average, even though tourism isn’t fully back,” he continued. “And our budget is in great shape — we have not touched one red cent from our rainy day fund throughout this whole time.

“Florida got it right, and the lockdown states got it wrong,” he added, to rousing cheers.

Earlier this month, DeSantis verbally backhanded the Biden administration after the president threatened to impose a travel ban on his state.

“The recent report that the Biden administration is considering restricting the travel of Floridians is completely absurd, especially when Biden allows illegal aliens to pour across our southern border. We won’t allow Floridians to be unfairly targeted for political purposes,” DeSantis said at a press conference.

“Any attempt to restrict or lock down Florida by the federal government would be an attack on our state, done purely for political purposes,” DeSantis added.

“I think it would be unconstitutional, it would be unwise and it would be unjust,” he also said.

DeSantis’ COVID policies have been emulated in other states, but frankly his is a blueprint for the entire country and especially Democrats in New York, New Jersey, and California, where lockdowns have failed and hospitalization and death rates have soared.

Despite that Biden (well, okay, Biden’s handlers) want to punish Florida anyway (because that’s what the left does to successful conservatives).

News Observer reported:

The Biden administration is considering whether to impose domestic travel restrictions, including on Florida, fearful that coronavirus mutations are threatening to reverse hard-fought progress on the pandemic.

Outbreaks of the new variants — including a highly contagious one first identified in the United Kingdom, as well as others from South Africa and Brazil that scientists worry can evade existing vaccines — have lent urgency to a review of potential travel restrictions within the United States, one federal official said.

“There are active conversations about what could help mitigate spread here, but we have to follow the data and what’s going to work. We did this with South Africa, we did this with Brazil, because we got clear guidance,” one White House official said.

“But we’re having conversations about anything that would help mitigate spread,” the official said, referring to discussions about new travel restrictions that could target the spread of the U.K. mutation in Florida.

If Democrats aren’t getting nervous already about a potential Ron DeSantis presidential run in the very near future, they should be. And Trump conservatives ought to be happy about it.
