Socialist and 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was recently forced to undergo emergency heart surgery to clean out a blocked artery. His campaign announced at the time that he is cancelling all of his events “until further notice.”

At the time, Sanders’ Senior Advisor Jeff Weaver broke the news in a statement saying that he was “in good spirits.” Check out the full statement below:

During a campaign event yesterday evening, Sen. Sanders experienced some chest discomfort. Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted. Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.

According to a new report however, Sanders’ status is worse than it originally seemed considering his doctors recently revealed that he had suffered from a heart attack.

Sanders’ treating physicians, Arturo Marchand Jr. and Arjun Gururaj, said in a statement:

After presenting to an outside facility with chest pain, Sen. Sanders was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction. He was immediately transferred to Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center. The Senator was stable upon arrival and taken immediately to the cardiac catheterization laboratory, at which time two stents were placed in a blocked coronary artery in a timely fashion. All other arteries were normal. His hospital course was uneventful with good expected progress. He was discharged with instructions to follow up with his personal physician.

In the hospital, Sanders tweeted: “Thanks for all the well wishes. I’m feeling good. I’m fortunate to have good health care and great doctors and nurses helping me to recover. None of us know when a medical emergency might affect us. And no one should fear going bankrupt if it occurs. Medicare for All!”

After being released from the hospital, Sanders tweeted: “I want to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center for the excellent care that they provided. After two and a half days in the hospital, I feel great, and after taking a short time off, I look forward to getting back to work.”

This is terrible news for Sanders and his progressive base considering this event is destined to ruin his chances to become president in 2020. Sanders has been on a steady climb over the past few months, slowly closing the gap between him and former Vice President Joe Biden however his health issues, like Biden, may completely ruin his chances of winning the Democratic nomination.
