While tens of millions of Americans were losing their jobs and businesses were closing due to state-imposed coronavirus mandates, Democrats dithered instead of helping Republicans and the White House craft legislation aimed at providing them with economic assistance.

And they did it for the most obtuse, self-serving reason: Political power.

What’s more, a member of the party just admitted it — on video.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal said during a videoconference misnamed with the hashtag “PutPeopleFirst” that she and her Left-wing colleagues in the House teamed up to block legislation to provide financial relief to small businesses whose employees are in dire economic straits so they could keep their political “leverage.”

This, at a time when literally days and even hours counted before some owners reached the end of their rope and had to file for bankruptcy. Let that sink in.

According to The Blaze:

The congresswoman made the comments during a virtual news conference Monday with fellow progressive lawmakers and activists, in which they pushed for illegal immigrants to be included in the next round of coronavirus relief, among other Congressional Progressive Caucus priorities.

“We don’t know what’s in the package yet, we only know what’s been reported,” Jayapal said during the conference, in reference to new legislation that was being pushed by Republicans. “But I think what you’re hearing from all of us on the call is that we have real concerns about giving away leverage now without getting some of the priorities we need” (my emphasis).

The Senate Republican Communications Center posted a video of those remarks on Twitter, noting: “Think about that: Democrats would rather use workers as partisan leverage than actually help them.”

As expected, Jayapal was in great Marxist company. Also on the call was Rep. Moar Pocan (D-Wis.) and “squad” members Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

Her disturbing and disgusting comments came as other, more serious lawmakers from both parties were involved in talks regarding a third phase of coronavirus package relief that was specifically aimed at helping small businesses avoid closure and employees who work at those firms from being jobless when it’s finally time to ‘allow’ Americans to return to work.

While Democrats haven’t been overly serious about getting a bill done, obviously, Republicans have been working hard in consultation with the White House to get a new package approved — which finally happened late Tuesday.

The Senate passed a $484 billion package that “includes an additional $310 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), including $60 billion specifically for community banks and smaller lenders, as well as $75 billion for hospitals, $25 billion for testing, and $60 billion for emergency disaster loans and grants, according to a summary obtained by The Hill.”

In a statement regarding the deal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) suggested that Democratic leaders finally abandoned a number of their “unrelated demands” during the final stages of negotiations. But he noted that the party took 12 long days to do so, and at the expense of many American workers.

As bad as the mandatory lockdowns of our economy have been — you see mostly Republican governors reversing course now — the Democrats’ political opportunism of using the pandemic to forward their agenda, as Americans suffered, is disgraceful. Remember in November.
