Never 'woke' enough: DC chapter of BLM rips mayor's 'Black Lives Matter' street mural as 'distraction'

No matter how ‘woke’ the Left gets, for some it’s never enough, as evidenced by complaints from the District of Columbia chapter of Black Lives Matter over an act of solidarity with the movement expressed by the black mayor of the city this week.

In case you missed it, Mayor Muriel Bowser instructed city crews and ‘local artists’ to plaster “Black Lives Matter” in yellow paint along a two-block stretch of street leading to the White House. At the same time, workers were seen replacing street signs as the area has now been designated “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”

ABC News gave some background:

It comes as the mayor has sparred with [President Donald] Trump over the response to the protests and as D.C. prepared for a demonstration on Saturday that was expected to bring tens of thousands of people into a city still under coronavirus restrictions.

Yes, and about those ‘coronavirus restrictions,’ they haven’t applied much lately in regards to demonstrations and protests related to the unnecessary death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of police.

“We know what’s going on in our country. There is a lot of anger. There is a lot of distrust of police and the government," the mayor said at a news conference. “There are people who are craving to be heard and to be seen and to have their humanity recognized. We had the opportunity to send that message loud and clear on a very important street in our city.”

So, BLM chapters around the country should be ecstatic, right? I mean, how much more ‘woke’ can you get outside of ordering crews to paint the slogan on a street leading to the White House.

Well, the DC BLM chapter wasn’t impressed.

“This is performative and a distraction from [Mayor Muriel Bowser’s] active counter organizing to our demands to decrease the police budget and invest in the community. Black Lives Matter means Defund the police,” they replied to a tweet by Rachel Chason, a Washington Post reporter.

Meanwhile, in a reply to a different tweet by New York Times writer Emily Badger, BLM DC called the mural painting a “distraction from real policy changes,” claiming Bowser just wants to “appease white liberals.”

“This is a performative distraction from real policy changes,” they said. “Bowser has consistently been on the wrong side of BLMDC history. This is to appease white liberals while ignoring our demands. Black Lives Matter means defund the police.”

Oh. And here we were under the impression that ‘black lives matter’ meant something else – like black lives matter. Isn’t ‘defund the police’ a separate group?

It sure seems like this organization keeps shifting the goalposts. Once they are appeased, suddenly the appeasement no longer goes far enough.

Yesterday it was, literally, ‘black lives matter’ (actually, every life is precious, regardless of your skin color). But suddenly, today, the slogan means ‘defund the police.’

What’s it going to mean tomorrow, ‘chaos is peace?’ ‘Reparations or bust?’

Some Leftists simply refuse to be satisfied, which proves that they never will be. So maybe a better tactic is to just stop trying.
