Shortly after Joe Biden was anointed president, a report began circulating claiming that former President Donald Trump was disgusted with the Republican Party and had told close aides and advisers that he was prepared to start his own third party.
But Trump’s people shot that down quickly, saying that the former president would be channeling his energies into taking the GOP away from the RINO types who long ago took it over.
That must have really frightened the Republican establishment because now, according to Reuters, it is they who are considering a third party — you know, because they’re just so ‘offended’ by Trump.

Dozens of former Republican officials, who view the party as unwilling to stand up to former President Donald Trump and his attempts to undermine U.S. democracy, are in talks to form a center-right breakaway party, four people involved in the discussions told Reuters.
The early stage discussions include former elected Republicans, former officials in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Trump, ex-Republican ambassadors and Republican strategists, the people involved say.
More than 120 of them held a Zoom call last Friday to discuss the breakaway group, which would run on a platform of “principled conservatism,” including adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law – ideas those involved say have been trashed by Trump.
The plan would be to run candidates in some races but also to endorse center-right candidates in others, be they Republicans, independents or Democrats, the people say.
One of the people who co-hosted the call was, according to Reuters, Evan McMullen, a former CIA operations officer who ran as an Independent for president in 2016 and couldn’t even out-poll Harambe the Gorilla or Deez Nuts, according to one survey.

Yes, by all means, let’s have a guy like McMullen lead the effort to form a third party.
If you might imagine that Trump is quaking in his boots…don’t. In fact, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll released in late January, nearly two-thirds of Republican voters, or about 64 percent, would follow Trump to a third party, not these RINOs, many of whom wound up voting for Biden in November.
These numbers show that despite the Capitol riots Trump remains a political force to be reckoned with. He benefits from a diverse base of support making up over a third of voters, voters who are attracted to him on a number of issues that are yet to be properly addressed by, and coopted by, Democratic and Republican elites,” Dritan Nesho, CEO and chief pollster at HarrisX, told Hill.TV.
“If Trump were to split from the GOP and create his own party, polling suggests he might well create the second largest political party in the country, knocking the GOP down to third place,” Nesho added.
This is 2016 all over again; this is like McMullen getting out-polled by the satirical candidacy of Brady C. Olson (Deez Nuts). They just don’t get it.
Conservatives found in Trump everything pseudo-conservatives in the RINO wing of the party have often offered but never delivered. And that’s why they will follow him wherever he goes, not the other way around.

Jeb Bush was supposed to be the GOP nominee in 2016; his campaign dumped more than $150 million into the primaries. He didn’t even come close.
But now, suddenly, because the thought of Trump taking their party over and their rejection by conservative voters so offends them, they want to go it alone.
Trump adviser Jason Miller summed it up best when he told Reuters: “These losers left the Republican Party when they voted for Joe Biden.”
